The Vogelsang FX series, or FarmerPump, is a liquid manure pump for farm work, in six sizes from FX116-60 to FX116-360. It covers up to 270 m³/h (4,500 l/min) and up to 8 bar. Circulating oil lubrication removes the greasing round, and a separation plate that turns with the lobes keeps fibre out of the gaps that raise torque.

Key features

No greasing round

An oil pump built into the gearbox keeps a constant supply of oil to every relevant gasket. Vogelsang's phrase for it is that the grease gun stays on the shelf.

A separation plate that turns with the lobes

Fibrous material gathers in gaps and cavities and pushes the torque up, which wastes pumping power. Rotating the separation plate removes one of those traps.

Block ring seal

Vogelsang's own variant of the mechanical seal, made to industry standards, with a block designed to raise the pump's resistance to fibre in the manure.

Axial wear plates

Highly wear-resistant special steel over the whole pump chamber. The plates take the abrasion so the housing does not.

Self-priming, and resistant to foreign bodies

Vogelsang's own headline characteristics for the series. It draws its own prime and takes the stray hard object that finds its way into a store.

Four ways to drive it

Cardan shaft, hydraulic motor, electric motor or combustion motor, mounted permanently or on a three-point base and run off the tractor power take-off.

About the Vogelsang FX series

Vogelsang built the FX on the R series and calls it the upgraded product from the proven R series, with three things integrated as standard: an industrial-standard block ring seal, a rotating separation plate, and a circulating oil lubrication system. Those three are the upgrade, and they are what you are choosing between the two ranges for.

One designation covers the range, FX116, in six sizes. Vogelsang calls them expansion stages, and stroke volume is what sets them apart.

Read the two middle columns before you read anything else on this page. Pressure falls as capacity rises. The 8 bar belongs to the smallest pump in the range and the 4,500 l/min to the largest, and you cannot have both. Need 6 bar, and you are choosing between the FX116-60, the FX116-120 and the FX116-180, the largest of which gives you 135 m³/h.

Vogelsang qualifies the capacity column itself, and the qualification matters on a farm. Those are maximum theoretical figures. What you actually get is normally lower, and it moves with the pressure difference, the viscosity of the medium and how the pump is installed. A long suction run into a store that has been sitting all winter is not the condition those numbers were taken under.

Sizing it

Oversizing is the default mistake in pump specification, and the FX punishes it twice. Go up a size for headroom you do not need and you give away pressure you might. The two move against each other across this range. Send us the real emptying time you are working to and the run you are pumping against, rather than a round number with margin already stacked into it.

Where it is the wrong pump

The FX is a farm pump and Vogelsang is direct about that. It calls it a professional liquid manure pump without torque boost, developed for the specific requirements of that medium. If the duty is an industrial one, or the build needs specifying against a chemically aggressive medium, with a wider choice of lobe materials and housing metallurgy or a sealing arrangement to a plant standard, the VX series is the range with those options in it. If the pump is going on a tank vehicle where every kilogram is payload, look at the LoadMaster instead.

We supply and support the range as a distributor. On an FX the decision is mostly the size, because the pump arrives configured for the job it was designed for. That makes it an easier specification than most of the Vogelsang rotary lobe line, and it makes the size harder to correct afterwards.

How the Vogelsang FX series works

Two lobed rotors turn in opposite directions inside the pump chamber and carry the medium round the outside from the suction side to the discharge side, which is the rotary lobe principle in one sentence. Delivery rate follows shaft speed, so the flow is set by how fast you turn the pump. Every size in the FX range runs to the same 650 rpm ceiling.

The separation plate, and why it turns

Liquid manure is full of fibrous material. It gathers in gaps and cavities inside a pump, and as it packs in, the torque needed to turn the rotors climbs. That costs three things: wear, pumping power, and fuel. Vogelsang's answer on the FX is to rotate the separation plate with the lobes rather than leave it fixed, taking one fibre trap out of the pump. Its own claim for the change is greater pump power and lower diesel or electricity consumption.

Lubrication

The FX carries an oil pump inside the gearbox that supplies oil evenly and constantly to all the relevant gaskets. There is no manual lubrication to do. On a pump that spends its working life on a yard rather than in a plant room, a maintenance job that gets skipped is a maintenance job that eventually costs a seal, so removing it is worth more than it sounds.

The seal

The weak point in almost any pump is the seal, and on the FX it is a block ring seal, Vogelsang's own variant of the mechanical seal, made to industry standards. Mechanical seals last considerably longer than radial shaft seals. The block is there to raise the pump's resistance to fibre in the manure, and Vogelsang states it extends the life of the unit against a traditional mechanical seal.

One thing no seal design changes: a mechanical seal needs liquid to lubricate it. Run an FX dry because a valve was left shut or the store emptied faster than expected, and you will be buying a seal. If that keeps happening, the fault is in the suction conditions or the sequence, not in the pump.

Wear and lobes

Axial wear plates in highly wear-resistant special steel line the pump chamber and take the wear instead of the housing, which is what lengthens the service interval. The rotary lobes have elastomer-coated cores, and Vogelsang selects the compound against the medium, for example NBR or FKM.

Driving it and mounting it

Four drive types are offered: cardan shaft, hydraulic motor, electric motor and combustion motor. Vogelsang lists the FX as usable anywhere there is a power take-off, either as a permanent installation or as a mobile unit on a three-point base. On a farm running one pump rather than two, that is worth as much as anything else on this page.
