The Vogelsang IQ series is a rotary lobe pump built around service access. Two models, the IQ112 up to 78 m³/h and the IQ152 up to 154 m³/h, both to 7 bar. The pump housing is a single component that comes off in a few movements while the pump stays bolted into the pipe.

Key features

A pump housing made of one part

Vogelsang reduced the IQ to a few individual elements. The housing is a single component, dismounted in a few movements for access to the pumping elements, and the pump itself stays screwed into the pipework.

InjectionSystem

Vogelsang's integrated foreign-matter protection for a rotary lobe pump. It makes the pump as resistant to foreign matter as it is to dry running, protects the lobes from damage, and holds the pumping speed uniform.

HiFlo rotary lobes

Pulsation-free pumping, which Vogelsang links to longer life for the drive and the coupling. The extra sealing lines raise suction capacity, enough to draw from deep pits.

Quality Cartridge shaft seal

The mechanical seal arrives as a cartridge, pre-assembled and computer-checked in the factory. That takes the assembly errors out of a seal change on site and shortens commissioning after one.

Half the central spare parts

Vogelsang halves the number of central spare parts against its conventional design. It also states that changing every wearing part on the pump, lobes and wear plates and housings and seals, takes under half the usual time.

More capacity without a new pump

Larger HiFlo lobes and a larger pump cover fit the same pump with no modification. Vogelsang puts the gain at up to 40% more pumping capacity.

About the Vogelsang IQ series

The IQ series is aimed at the cost of maintaining a rotary lobe pump, not the cost of buying one. The pumping principle is the same as the rest of the Vogelsang range, and the lobes are the same HiFlo geometry. What changed is the count of parts around them. Vogelsang states the number of central spare parts is halved against its conventional design, and that a full wearing-parts change takes less than half the usual time.

Two models cover the range, and that is the first thing to check. The IQ112 goes to 78 m³/h and the IQ152 to 154 m³/h, both at up to 7 bar. Vogelsang puts the IQ on primary sludge, media carrying coarse matter such as contaminated used oil, and abrasive duties in disposal, and its own case studies for the series run to latex and copolymers, abrasive paints, and a sewage works with very little room to work in.

Where the VX series is the better buy

Above 154 m³/h or 7 bar, the IQ is out of range and you are looking at the VX series instead, which carries five model ranges and a much wider build envelope. The IQ is also the wrong answer if the duty is clean, thin liquid at moderate head. A centrifugal costs less to buy and less to run, and the rule of thumb we work to is that positive displacement earns its money once you are past roughly 3–4% solids, or the medium thickens, or it must not be sheared.

Dry running

Vogelsang lists the IQ as resistant to dry running, and puts that down to a fluid reservoir and the design of the gearbox housing, backed by the InjectionSystem. That is a real design property. Read it as tolerance rather than permission. A mechanical seal needs liquid to lubricate it, and dry running is one of the three things that finishes pumps on a wastewater site, alongside rag and grit. If a pump is running dry in service, the suction conditions are wrong, and the fix is upstream of the pump.

What you give up

Configuration breadth. The IQ is deliberately simplified, and the price of simplifying a pump is that fewer things about it are variable. If your duty needs an unusual sealing arrangement or a build the two models do not cover, the VX or the EP series is the range with the options in it. Tell us the duty first and we will say which.

How the Vogelsang IQ series works

Two lobed rotors turn against each other inside the pump chamber and carry a fixed volume of medium around the outside of the chamber on every revolution. The displacement is positive, so flow holds up as the discharge pressure rises instead of falling away the way a centrifugal's does. Delivery rate follows shaft speed, which is why a rotary lobe pump is straightforward to control on a variable-speed drive.

The one-piece housing

The IQ pump housing is a single component, where the VX pump chamber is built up from more parts. Undo it, lift it off, and the pumping elements are in front of you with the pump still screwed into the pipe. That is the whole design argument for the series. It is also why the QuickService claim goes further here than elsewhere in the range. Lobes, seal, wear plates and housing all change on site, and the pump never comes out.

Connections are the other half of the same idea. Vogelsang supplies variable series connecting parts that suit the common installation situations, so the pump goes into a range of positions, tank vehicles and mobile units included, without special connectors. A drain plug empties the pump chamber almost completely before service.

The InjectionSystem

Vogelsang calls this the first integrated foreign-matter protection built into a rotary lobe pump. It protects the lobes from damage and keeps the pumping speed uniform, and it is the same feature Vogelsang credits for the pump's tolerance of dry running. The dry-running side of it comes from a fluid reservoir and the design of the gearbox housing, not from anything in the lobes themselves.

Lobes and capacity

The IQ uses Vogelsang's HiFlo rotary lobes. Against a conventional lobe they pump without pulsation, which Vogelsang ties to longer drive and coupling life, and the higher number of sealing lines lifts the suction capacity enough to pull from a deep pit. The lobes and the pump cover are interchangeable for larger sizes, fitted without modifying anything else, and Vogelsang states that route gives up to 40% more pumping capacity. Worth knowing before you oversize at specification: the headroom can be bought later.

Sealing and materials

The shaft seal is the Vogelsang Quality Cartridge, a mechanical seal built as a cartridge, assembled and computer-checked in the factory so a site change does not depend on getting the assembly right. Standard build is abrasion-resistant grey cast iron. ADI and stainless steel versions are stocked, and Vogelsang will make the pump chamber components in duplex steel or a nickel-based alloy on request. Heat treatment and wear-resistant coatings are available for the wear plates and the housing components.

Hazardous areas

Vogelsang states that an ATEX-compliant version can be supplied for use in areas subject to explosion hazards. That is an option you specify, not a property the range carries, and certification applies to a specific build rather than to a series.
