The Vogelsang VY series is a two-model range of rotary lobe pumps, the VY100 and the VY136, for demanding industrial duties. Its one-piece housing is low in dead space and can be flushed and disinfected to clean-in-place and sterilise-in-place requirements. Performance runs from 1 m³/h to 120 m³/h at a maximum pressure of 10 bar.

Key features

One-piece housing with few sealing points

The pump chamber is manufactured in one piece and flow-optimised, which is where Vogelsang's efficiency claim on difficult media comes from. Fewer sealing points also leaves fewer places for residue to sit.

Cleaned and disinfected in place

The low dead space design lets the housing be flushed and disinfected in accordance with CIP and SIP requirements, so the pump can stay in a line that is cleaned that way.

Seals specified against your industry standard

The VY takes the Vogelsang Quality-Cartridge or the CoX-Cartridge, a double mechanical seal for high pressures and temperatures that Vogelsang lists as TA-Luft compliant.

Axial and radial wear plates

Axial plates in highly wear-resistant special steel protect the chamber; radial plates are the option for abrasive media, and the plating concept bolts them from the outside.

Service without taking the pump out of the pipe

The QuickService design reaches all wetted components with the pump still in the line, and Vogelsang's quick connection takes higher flange loads while simplifying maintenance.

About the Vogelsang VY series

Vogelsang built the VY on the VX. The pumping principle, the lobe geometries and the wear-plate arrangement carry across; what changed is the housing. The VY chamber is manufactured in one piece with a minimum of sealing points, the same approach Vogelsang uses on its EP series, and it is low in dead space so residue does not accumulate in it.

That housing is the reason to choose a VY. It can be flushed and disinfected in accordance with clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilise-in-place (SIP) requirements. If your line is cleaned that way, that fact decides the selection and the rest of the comparison is secondary.

What you give up is the model spread. The VY is two models, the VY100 and the VY136, covering 1 m³/h to 120 m³/h at a maximum pressure of 10 bar. The VX series is available in five series with up to eight sizes, so it reaches duty points the VY does not. Where the line carries no cleaning requirement, the VX is the range to look at first.

Vogelsang aims the VY at the chemical and process industries and at the food sector, and names paint, sugar, wine and raw materials for construction chemistry among the media it moves. Paper and textiles are on its list too. What those have in common is that they punish a centrifugal: abrasive, aggressive, viscous, or carrying contamination.

Where it is the wrong pump is clean, thin liquid at moderate head. The trade rule of thumb is roughly 3–4% solids. Above that, or once the medium thickens or must not be sheared, positive displacement earns its cost. Below it a centrifugal is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run, and no build specification changes that.

We supply the range as a distributor, and on a VY the build matters more than the size. The lobe material, the wear plates, the seal and the housing metallurgy are all selections against your medium and your cleaning regime. The seal is where it usually goes wrong. It is the weak point in almost any pump, and on a VY it is also the component that decides whether the pump meets your industry's standard.

How the Vogelsang VY series works

Vogelsang rotary lobe pumps are contactless rotating positive displacement pumps. Two lobed rotors turn in opposite directions and carry the medium round the outside of the chamber from the suction side to the discharge side, which is the rotary lobe principle in one sentence. Delivery rate rises in proportion to speed, so the flow is set by how fast you turn the pump. A speed sensor is available as an option, mounted on the drive or with the Universal Drive System, and gives you the basis for measuring it.

The one-piece housing is where the efficiency comes from. Manufacturing the chamber in one piece with fewer sealing points produces a high-precision, flow-optimised end product that Vogelsang rates as efficient even on difficult media. Low dead space is the other consequence, and it is what makes the CIP and SIP cleaning possible.

Lobes come in a straight double-wing geometry, or as 3-wing, 4-wing or 6-wing HiFlo. The HiFlo lobes pump pulsation-free, which extends the life of the drive and coupling, and their higher number of sealing lines raises suction capacity enough to draw from deep pits. Materials run to NBR, NBR white, EPDM-SL, EPDM-AL, EPDM white, CSM, FKM, PU, stainless steel and nitrided steel.

Wear is taken on plates rather than on the housing. Axial wear plates in highly wear-resistant special steel protect the whole pump chamber as standard, and radial plates line the rest of it for abrasive media. Vogelsang's plating concept bolts the plates from the outside in four modules, so a plate change means removing the cover and lifting the modules out rather than dismantling the lobes. The QuickService design reaches all wetted components without removing the pump from the pipe.

On sealing you choose between the Vogelsang Quality-Cartridge and the CoX-Cartridge. The CoX is a double mechanical seal with coaxially arranged pairs of seals, aimed at high pressures and temperatures and at adhesive or chemically aggressive media, and Vogelsang lists it as TA-Luft compliant and pressure-relieved for low wear. The API-Cartridge is offered for the EP series only. Where the seal needs support, the Automatic Supply Unit (ASU) is compatible with the VY, and Vogelsang lists supply systems for flushing plans in accordance with API 682 among the VY options.

For hazardous areas, Vogelsang lists ATEX and TA-Luft conformity under the VY series options, and states that an ATEX-compliant version can be supplied for use in areas subject to explosion hazards. That is a version you specify, not a property of the range.
